The Chanot Art Center and the Onde Art Center in Vélizy are joining forces to present a joint exhibition and establish an artistic dialogue between two neighboring areas. The exhibition “Les Récits de l'insu” (The Stories of the Unconscious) takes its title from an expression used by Michel de Certeau, who, in his book The Practice of Everyday Life, highlights unconscious or “unconscious” knowledge that is transmitted through action and oral tradition.

Bringing together highbrow and popular culture, visual artists adopt the anthropologist's approach and seek out traditions, immerse themselves in age-old myths, and practice disciplines dating back to antiquity in order to appropriate ancestral know-how and ancient rituals. This two-part exhibition brings together some fifteen artists of French and international origin. Emerging artists rub shoulders with leading figures such as Guidette Carbonnell and develop their artistic research through video, photography, sculpture, and drawing.

Artists explore and attempt to go beyond the possibilities offered by popular arts. In doing so, they bring practices such as ceramics, tapestry, and ikebana into the modern era. They invent and revisit seasonal rituals, thereby encouraging new, non-academic approaches.
